DAY 6 OF THE SOUTH AFRICA 2010 FIFA WORLD CUP

Today was the day most fans of the beautiful game called football have been waiting for. It was the day one of the favourites-arguably the biggest favourites in the competition- took to the pitch. That team of course is Spain(who the hell didn't know that).Although their opponents-Switzerland- weren't a big team, the match was still looked forward to with eager anticipation. The match begin at 3p.m Nigerian time. Another match looked forward to,especially by South Africans and indeed the rest of Africa-especially black Africa, was the one that pitted the hosts, South Africa against Uruguay. That match was the last of the day. The first match of the day was between Chile, a team that was on a 13- match losing streak, and Honduras, a lowly ranked team.
In the Chile-Honduras match, the Honduras looked like they were way out of their depth. The Chileans were superior in every department but the goal keeping department.Full marks to Valadares-the Honduran goalkeeper-for preventing an outrageous scoreline in favour of Chile and helping his team look most honourably. Alexis Sanchez, the Chilean right winger showed why he was the target of a big club like Real Madrid. He was the focal point of the Chilean attack and was a bag of tricks on the day. At the end of the day, it was Beausejour that got the goal for Chile in the 34th minute. There was an element of luck involved there as Beausejour was just rightly-placed to tuck in a ball that ricotched off a Honduras defender. The scoreline at the end of the match was 1-nil.
The second match of the day, to most people, was a foregone conclusion-a mere formality-before the players had even gotten on the pitch. It was a group H match between Spain and Switzerland, and Spain with its array of superstars were expected to white-wash the Swiss. But, that was not to be. The European champions it seems are still bugged by their world cup jinx. Even the possession of names like Puyol, Xavi, Iniesta, Sergio Ramos, Davis Villa, Silva and many others was not enough to give them the win and the consequent 3 points. They LOST by 1goal to nil(1-0) in the Moses Mabhida Stadium,Durban. The Spaniards almost all te possession in the game but it was the Swiaa that got the goal when a long goal kick was flick to Eren Derdiyok who played the ball past Csillas and his defenders for a simple touch into the net by former Manchester City man Fernandes. This happened in the second half. Even the latter inclusion of Fernando Torres, Pedro and Jesus Navas could not salvage the match for the spaniards. Vincente Del Bosque's men suffered just their second defeat in 49 matches at the hands of Ottmar Hitzveld's men. And it had to be at the World Cup?Damn! What a shame!

As for the final match of day 6, I will say that I was-and still am- bloody disappointed. Not in the Bafana Bafana who lost by 3 goals to nil, but disappointed with the referee. The Swiss referee destroyed the Group A match and proved that he was not really good enough to referee at the mundial. Diego Forlan's and Uruguay's second goal of the match should never have been. It came via a penalty that should not have been awarded in the first place. Then to make matters worse, the South African goal keeper was sent off for an alleged infringement against a uruguayan player. It was just a raw display of bias and racism against the hosts. I will say no more about that match. Now Uruguay have 4 points and South Africa have just 1. They desperately need a win against France to graduate to the next stage. Given the form of the french and the fact that african teams like Senegal and Nigeria have beaten them in the past, a triumph over the french is not an impossibility for tha Bafana Bafana.Below are pics from the day. Enjoy!

Chile's Matias Fernandes(l) celebrates with the goal scorer Jean Beausejour after the latter scored in the 34th minute.
Noel Valladares denies Waldo Ponce the opportunity to extend Chile's lead to 2-0 and get on the score shit with this miraculous save.Like say the 1-0 never do Ponce.Denied mofucka!

This is another view, another angle. See how all the players are watching intently to see what happens. Kind of like someone told em all to stop moving and watch.Funny.

O boy dis Puyol na beast o. Just look im face! The guy be like cave man wey dey chase cavewoman wey im wan rape.

God am I this poor? Why the hell can't I score? What did I miss that clear chance for?

Rhymes aside, the fucker must have been thinking along those lines. Well, this is not LaLiga and you are not playing with Valencia. This is the WORLD CUP and you are playing for stupid Spain! That is David Villa by the way.

Fernandes celebrates after getting his first goal and Switzerland's first goal in the world cup. This goal handed the Swiss their first win in a world cup opener since 1954. Way to Fernie!

Diego Forlan's superb strike that got the Uruguayans their first goal in the match.

Alvaro Pereira trebles Uruguay's tally and trebles the pain of the Bafana Bafana and their fans.
